Cricut & Fabric Fun!

I recently decided to cut fabric with my Cricut. I was a little hesitant at first - I didn't want to mess anything up. I wish I didn't wait so long - this is FUN!

This is what I learned:

Supplies Needed:

  • Fabric (pressed, with no wrinkles or creases)
  • Therm O Web Heat-n-Bond Ultra Hold (in red package). This is sold by the yard as well as in packages.
  • Iron
  • NEW Cricut Blade (keep it for fabric only)

Directions:
Note: All directions come on the Therm o Web package. Pre wash all fabrics (do NOT use fabric softeners), unless you won’t be washing item being cut.
  1. Pre-heat dry iron to silk setting ( DO NOT use steam). Place heat-n-bond paper (smooth) side up on wrong side of material.
  2. Place and hold heated iron on paper side for 2 seconds. Repeat, by gliding iron slightly overlapping prior area until entire surface has been bonded. Allow material to cool
  3. Cut edges to size you want (12x12 or whatever). Peel off paper backing and place on Cricut mat.
  4. Set Cricut Machine to:
    1. Blade - 5
    2. Pressure – Max
    3. Speed – 1
Once image has been cut, place it on where you will be applying it, then iron (right side up) for 8-10 seconds. Repeat by gliding iron slightly overlapping prior area until entire surface has been bonded.

I used the princess crown from one of the Princess cartridges and I used the Superman emblem from the Superman cartridge. I forgot what font the letter "B" came from - but anything will do

Don’t Sew – due to the thickness of the adhesive, machine stitching is not recommended. *

* I didn't listen to this last part - and sewed the crown and letter "B" on my daughters cape, and it gave me a bunch of grief - I should have listened! So make sure you press it well and it will be fine. I didn't sew for my son's superman style and it was fine.

I followed this blog for the cape itself tutorial:
Have fun and if you want to join our Cricut Club please call the store at 603-964-8596 for details.

Cricut + Vinyl = Great Gifts!

I LOVE my Cricut and I love that I can personalize many things easily! I made these great Copco "sippy cups" for my daughter's teachers.
I used these setting for my machine:
Blade Depth: 6
Speed: 2
Pressure: 2
This will do a "kiss cut" - which means it will cut the vinyl, but not the paper the vinyl is on.
Once I cut my image, I use blue painters tape to stick to the vinyl. Then I peel it off the backing and
adhere my cut letters/shape to my cup! Easy Peasy!

Technique Tuesday

Today's card is actually a way for me to introduce you to Michelle Zindorf and her amazing work!  This is a card I created but it was created using Michelle's techniques...well...some of her techniques.  The truth be told, she uses a brayer to add color to her projects and I never seem to be able to use a brayer very well (this tells me we need to tap Michelle to come and teach a class!) so I used a blending tool and/or sponges to add the color to my Michelle-inspired cards.

Head on over to Michelle's blog and check out her beautiful work!

Layout Highlight

It's time to share another page layout and I'm in love with this creation from Nicole Wise! Nicole is a talented designer and I confess that I love giving her more complicated pages to work with. Shhh...don't tell her! :-) You know those pages you see and love at a store but can't imagine how you'd use in to create a page? This is one of those papers. I adore this shell design, which is full of texture and glitter but with the wide border at the bottom I couldn't figure out the best way to use the paper to create a page. Nicole did an amazing job of showcasing just one photo, of her sweet puppy, sitting on the beach. She used glitter letters for the word "baby," which was a perfect way to mimic the glitter at the bottom of the page. And she kept things simple...just a short journaling paragraph and a big 'ol bow. What a great page and you can stop in and see this beauty in person at the store! While you're here...take a few photos for inspiration and grab some paper for your own page!

Technique Tuesday

I'm going to chat about a quick and easy technique today...dying ribbon! There are a number of ways to take white or cream ribbon and change the color to match your cardstock, as I did on today's card. I'm going to share a number of links for the different options available.

Using Distress Inks - This is one of my favorite methods to dye ribbon (and the technique I used for the card), shown by Tim Holtz. You'll need to scroll through this post until you get to the portion where he showcases how to dye ribbon with Distress Inks.

Using Copic Markers - This is an exciting post by Nichole Heady, showing how to use Copic Markers to make striped ribbon!

You can also use the chisel tip of a Copic Marker to create a solid color on ribbon. Alcohol inks also work to dye ribbon but are super messy...wear gloves when using alcohol inks!

Now what is the best ribbon to use for dying? My favorite choice is seam binding. This isn't your mother's seam binding, which is very thick, stiff, and only a good option for clothing! This ribbon is very lightweight and soft. You can invest in purchasing this type of ribbon in a variety of colors or you can stop in at the store and purchase the white ribbon by the yard. Then take it home and use your stash of markers and inks to experiment with color options! Another great option is grosgrain ribbon, which is a great choice when using Copics. Whatever option you choose, you're sure to have fun with the creating your own unique ribbon colors!
